On July 27, our local House of Representatives member Mike Garcia claimed in an op-ed on Fox Business that "Democrats spend taxpayer dollars on needless programs and drive inflation higher."
The next day, Garcia joined House Democrats to pass a 280 billion dollar spending boondoggle, driving deficit spending and inflation even higher. The massive budget-busting bill is over a thousand pages long, so it is extremely unlikely that Garcia or any of his staff bothered to read it in its entirety. It's also doubtful that they read the CBO estimates that the bill will increase the deficit by $79.3 billion. Except for Garcia, not a single member of California's Republican congressional delegation voted for the inflationary spending.
The bill, titled The CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, throws money at multiple efforts to increase the "diversity" of the STEM workforce and the "diversity" of institutions able to compete for awards from the National Science Foundation and other federal agencies. (NSF gets a whopping $81 billion.)
